19th April 2016, Switzerland. The estimated total annual cost of littering in Switzerland is said to be around CHF 200 million. Throwing a cigarette butt on the street or an empty can in public place is set to become an offense. The new regulations, supported by the Federal Council, and likely to be adopted by parliament over summer, will apply in Switzerland. Under the new rules, fines as high as CHF 300 will be handed out for minor acts of littering. The proposed rules also include fines of up to CHF 20,000 for the inappropriate disposal of large quantities of household waste.
